Azimio la Umoja Rebrands to Ukombozi Alliance
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced on September 21, 2026, that the Azimio la Umoja Coalition has been renamed the Ukombozi Alliance. He made the announcement at a press briefing alongside co-principals including Siaya Governor James Orengo, unveiling the coalition's new slogan: "One Term, One Team, One Coalition."
What Changes Next
Starting September 22, the rebranded alliance was scheduled to meet with the Jubilee Party to chart a joint political strategy. Kalonzo also said a formal handover of Azimio's old structures and authority to the new outfit would follow in the coming days.
New Coalition Partners
Kalonzo confirmed that several parties are set to join the Ukombozi Alliance, including:
- Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP) — led by former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza
- United Green Movement (UGM) — led by former Chief Justice David Maraga, who is also a declared 2027 presidential aspirant
More parties are expected to formalize their membership as the alliance takes shape.
Reaction to the High Court Ruling
Kalonzo also welcomed a High Court decision issued the day before, which struck down sections of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act barring retired presidents from active political participation — a move the court found unconstitutional.
He went on to criticize President William Ruto for describing former President Uhuru Kenyatta as a "rebel leader," arguing that Kenyatta had deliberately stayed out of the political rivalry and that such language conflicted with the president's constitutional obligations.
